How to make this rainbow squares quilt (baby size)
A rainbow colour palette is very 2019 Jodie but I had SO much fun sewing together this group of quilts. I’ve got another blog post for how to sew together a stripy rainbow quilt and here is the one for the squares rainbow quilt! The instructions are for a quilt that is approximately 38” x 38”. I’ve also got a blog post on how I made four different rainbow quilts with one bundle which you can find here.
You need:
(15) 3” x 3” squares in 15 different colours (225 squares in total)
1.25 yards backing fabric (I used a red gingham)
(5) strips of 2.25” x Width of Fabric (WOF) strips for binding
Start by splitting your fabric squares from each colour into (1) pile of 8 squares and (1) pile of 7 squares. This is important so you have enough squares to alternate. You will have 15 piles in total and each one will create a row.
Then create 15 new piles of squares so in each new pile you have (8) squares of Fabric 1 and (7) squares of Fabric 2.
Take one pile of (8) squares of Fabric 1 and (7) squares of Fabric 2 and sew them together, alternating Right Sides Together (RST) as follows using 1/4” seam. You will start and end with the fabric that has 8 squares.
Then repeat for your other 14 piles of fabric to create (15) rows in total.
Lay them out making sure you have a good selection of colours. Press your seams in the odd rows (eg 1,3,5,7 etc) in one direction and seams in even rows (eg 2,4,6,8 etc in the opposite direction. This way the seams will nest together perfectly.
Then it’s time to sew your rows together!
Give your quilt a good press and your quilt top is done!
