How to: make a quilt for a sports fan / college quilt
My wonderful boss recently left for another opportunity and I wanted to make her a quilt. She is also a massive Geelong Cats fan (and I was also short on time) so I thought I could make her a simple quilt in the colours. But this pattern will work for any team and comes together in no time at all! Plus you can make it extra special with curved corners and some hand quilting. So lets get started!
These instructions make a quilt which is approximately 55” x 63” but you could alter the cuts and strips to make it bigger or smaller. So lets get started!
You need:
1.5 yards Colour A
1.25 yard Colour B
0.5 yards binding
3-4 yards backing
Cutting instructions:
Cut (7) 7.5” x WOF strips Colour A
Subcut (2) strips into (3) 7.5” x 14'“ for a total of (6) 7.5” x 14” pieces (you will have one spare piece)
Cut (6) 7.5” x WOF strips Colour B
Subcut (2) strips into (2) 7.5” x 14'“ for a total of (4) 7.5” x 14” pieces
Binding: Cut (6) 2.25” x WOF strips
Trim off the selvage of your WOF strips to make them ~42” (if your WOF is a little larger, keep it like that wide and your quilt will be a littlte wider!).
Take (1) 7.5” x 42” strip Colour A and (1) 7.5” x 14” strip Colour A and sew together, Right Sides Together (RST) using 1/4” seam as follows.
Repeat for your remaining Colour A strips and pieces to make (5) 7.5” x 55.” strips in total.
Take (1) 7.5” x 42” strip Colour B and (1) 7.5” x 14” strip Colour B and sew together, Right Sides Together (RST) using 1/4” seam as follows.
Repeat for your remaining Colour B strips and pieces to make (4) 7.5” x 55.” strips in total.
Now we have our strips, we are going to sew them together. Start with (1) of your Colour A strips and (1) of your Colour B strips and sew them together, RST using 1/4” seam.
Note the seam in the diagram below- these should alternate so you don’t have the seam lining up. Continue with the rest of your pieces until you have 9 “stripes” in total.
And your quilt top is done! Baste, quilt and bind as desired :-)
I hand quilted mine using white thread and I love how much extra texture it adds. I also did curved corners. I used Colour A for my binding to tie everything together and used a gingham for backing. :-)
